Three Scenes by a Lake

to Zhang Ying

I did not want to lead -
just follow, and watch...

You watched a child
playing with his father.
and looked across the water
to try to see the other side

You smiled at me
and I smiled back.

I held you up, supported you in your caper -
a peaceful risk by a lake with calm waves...

You stood above it all,
not behind the rail, but on it,
to better see the soft swells and soft sand,
to feel the breeze

You felt this scene, experienced it
and I held your hand.

I wanted to know you...

We gently spoke to each other,
shared what was internal and personal

as we lingered by the lake.
